How to split a restaurant bill fairly

The awkward bit isn’t the maths. It’s getting five people to agree what they ordered while the waiter waits and the Uber’s outside.

Why equal split often isn’t fair

Equal split works when everyone ordered roughly the same. It falls apart when:

• One person only had a starter and a soft drink
• Two people shared the loaded fries
• Someone skipped alcohol
• Service is 12.5% on top of uneven mains
